We are losing our planet's rich heritage of biological diversity at an alarming rate. Today, we are experiencing the 6th great wave of extinction, and this time, human activity is largely responsible. By some estimates, we are losing over 100,000 plant and animal species a year - about 1 every 5 minutes. A majority of the planet's biological diversity and 95% of its cultural diversity resides in the homelands of indigenous peoples and small-scale, local communities.
